Requesting your Help: Fund Raising For Surgery As some of you are aware, my wife Linda and I are going out of country this week so that she can have surgery to remove a Cavernous Malformation in her brain. She was diagnosed with this exactly two years ago, in June 2008, when speech impairments suddenly arose. At the time, we were told that the lesion, which had hemorrhaged, had become the size of a golf ball. We were beyond shocked as we were completely unaware that she even had this rare lesion. For these vascular malformations, removal of the tumor is the only cure. Otherwise they grow through hemorrhage and re-hemorrhage, causing the acute-onset of neurological deficits. However, in my wife's case, we were informed by the chief neurosurgeon at Sunnybrook Health Science Centre that due to it being in a very eloquent location, directly in the speech and language centre, it was decided that removal of the cavernoma would be too risky. That is, the surgical risks of permanent language impairments, affecting her speech and comprehension were too high. We were then sent home and given the only option which was to accept this life long diagnoses and live in the fear of the devastating affects of repeated hemorrhages for the rest of her life. It took Linda about 18 months to recover from her speech deficits but some still remain. Since then, we have seen many top neurosurgeons who all agree that it is better to do nothing unless it is completely necessary. That means, until it bleeds again and again, resulting in irreversible tissue damage. Through research, Linda recently found the name of world's leading neurosurgeon, Dr. Robert Spetzler at Barrow Neurosurgical Institute in Phoenix Arizona. (He is the doctor who trained Bret Michaels' doctor at the same hospital). Dr. Spetzler specializes in Cavernomas and has resected more than any surgeon world-wide. He has a reputation for successfully performing the most in-operable surgeries. In April 2010, after the review of her case and scans, we were ecstatic to hear that Linda was offered surgical resection of her cavernous malformation by Dr. Spetzler at this hospital, which is internationally recognized as a leader in neurological research and offers the most advanced neurosurgical techniques to treat vascular lesions. Dr. Spetzler has assured us that the benefits of this surgery out-way the risks, which he deems to be less than 1% under his care and under the team at Barrow. We realize that this is the best chance we will have. However, because this out of country procedure is not covered by OHIP, we must cover the high costs ourselves, which will be over $125,000. Thus, we are humbly asking for donations of any amount in order to raise funds to help us cover these costs. Please know that any contribution you make will positively impact our lives.
